I am a firm believer that we are what we eat. That does not stop with us, it very much has an effect on our pets as well. The quality and type of food you choose to feed your dogs directly affects their behavior and ability to make good choices.
This page was created to answer the many questions that I get pertaining to what I feed my dogs and puppies, what supplements I use and why.
The quick answer is I feed a combination of a Prey Model Diet and PawTree Freeze Dried Raw Food.
People new to the concept of feeding raw, are often overwhelmed with how to get started. Many turn to their vets for assistance only to be told by many (but not all) that they do not recommend it. I am here to share what we have done with success over the last decade. These are the same guidelines that many of our training clients choose to switch too, and our puppy buyers choose to continue using when their pups come home.
You will find that just like us when we eat a whole food diet, our health improves, as do our pets. You will see this in their temperament, coats, oral health, and waste (poop... much less poop!). Food & Supplements
Before I dive into the food, it is important to address supplements. I am of the mindset that no one food is perfect, for that reason I use and recommend a couple of different products for my dogs, from companies that I know and trust.
Whether you are feeding a kibble based diet, a premade raw diet, or another form of homemade natural diets, it is important that we properly support our dogs overall nutrition. All puppies are born with an immature immune system, at under 6 weeks of age puppies rely on mother's colostrum for the antibodies needed to combat health threats. pawTree Freeze-Dried Raw Food
I feed and recommend a raw food diet for your puppy. Your puppy was weaned onto this food, and should continue eating this food during their transition home.
Our dogs eat a combination of a Prey Model Diet (you can see more about that by clicking here) and the pawTree Freeze Dried Raw Foods. I rotate the proteins, which means that I feed turkey, beef, and chicken on a regular basis. This is what we use exclusively when we travel, it is much simpler, takes up less space, and can be fed dry or with warm water added.
I do recommend adding the water, as studies have shown, pets that have a higher moisture content food throughout their lives are expected to live on average 2 years longer than those that eat exclusively dry food (on eof the reasons I am not a fan of kibble).
You will find with feeding a raw diet that your puppy will poop less, will drink less, and in turn be easier to potty train.
